In one of the largest pilgrimages in the world, millions of faithful come from all over Mexico to the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe in celebration of the country's patron saint. For many, Guadalupe represents both the Christian Virgin Mary and the Aztec earth mother Tonantzin: to the "peregrinos," as they are known, Juan Diego's vision in 1531 of a young woman on a Tepeyac hill was the start of an enduring legend which inspires to this day.
