Russia "A Visit to Uglich and Yaroslavl" Jay Dunn 62 images Created 18 Sep 2014
The town of Uglich and the city of Yaroslavl are “Golden Ring” cities in Russia, designating them both culturally rich and of great historical importance. An afternoon or a morning in either cannot but yield impressions, of backstreet markets full of colorful produce, quiet sanctuaries rich with history, playful children enjoying their last days of summer. Yaroslavl, which just celebrated its 1000th anniversary, is very much a city now, dotted with factories on its outskirts, yet a World Heritage site at heart, framed by two rivers, landmark onion domes rising all around. Uglich is charming, a town of simple pleasures, heavenly churches and a wealth of human endeavor in the fields that surround this historic settlement along the Volga River.

On the streets, welcome smiles, dark poetry, stoic faces, soaring harmonies, everyday kindness, the simplicity and strength of true faith - what can only be fleeting impressions of a complicated, beautiful people."
