For the majority Hispanic community of Salinas, the celebration of Mexican Independence Day on September 16th is special indeed. The occasion marks the symbolic beginning of Mexico's revolution against Spanish rule, a chance for all to show solidarity and civic pride, especially during the formal reenactment of "El Grito,” or “The Cry of Independence.” The annual fiesta occupies a long stretch of East Alisal Street between Wood and North Sanborn, which brims with patriotic souvenirs, every kind of food and drink, and information about health and community programs. Uniting everyone are traditional “bandas,” filling the afternoon with dance music and good cheer.
