On Thursday, January 31st, Salinas city workers, health officials and police conducted an early morning sweep of the Chinatown homeless population, removing encampments on the street and in lots between buildings all along Soledad Street. Although ample warning had been given by authorities, a number of homeless were displaced and have now scattered across the city. A fencing company moved in right behind the city’s workers, digging postholes, and erecting chain link fencing in sections. Using a front loader, unclaimed possessions were taken away and disposed of over the course of three hours, leaving many people standing about on the street with nowhere to go.
