In an innovative move, CSUMB's fenced area next to the Chinatown Community Learning Center was designated a secure belongings zone for the day, manned by a check-in system, enabling residents to reclaim their possessions at the end of the day. Food and music was planned for later in the day inside the Chinatown Community Gardens. This well-organized plan made a noticeable difference to everyone. Residents were more prepared for the event, and that made the city's effort to ensure cleanliness in the area less traumatic.

 • Around thirty determined people attended a peace rally at Hartnell College on Monday, then marched to the Salinas Police Department carrying signs and chanting. The rally, called #Baltimore2California, was organized to show unity with citizens of Baltimore protesting the death in police custody of Freddie Gray.

According to a poster disseminated on Twitter, the group’s aim is to “march in solidarity with black people of color who face state-sponsored violence in Baltimore. Join us in addressing that has been experienced by people of color throughout the state.”

Named on the group’s Twitter poster are Angel Ruiz, Osman Hernandez, Carlos Mejia-Gomez, Frank Alvarado, Jr. and Jaime Garcia, who died in Salinas under controversial circumstances.

“I’m here today to stand with the people of Baltimore who rose up after the vicious murder of Freddie Gray. I’m here because their struggles mirror our struggles. Unemployment, gangs and racist cops are all used to keep us in our place. But today, we say no more, no more police brutality, no more violence without accountability. Power belongs to the people, and today we’re taking our power back,” said Miranda Mossey, a Salinas resident and Hartnell student.
