Appreciative fans and some enthusiastic dancers welcomed dark harmonic waves, heartfelt lyrics, and solid musicianship from Gilroy's Disruption, who opened the night, Windows of Lucidity, from Monterey, Worship, from Salinas, Gonzales' The Art of Torture, celebrating a CD release, and headliners Aethere, from Salinas. The nearly five-hour event, brought together through social media and word-of-mouth, was characterized by camaraderie and good humor throughout.

  • In a welcome scene near the Maya Theater in Oldtown Salinas on Saturday night, an energetic crowd of young music fans jammed the Pica Fresh Mex restaurant for a five-band show. Metal headliners Vianna from Salinas brought together like-minded Asterion and A Breed Extinct, also from Salinas, adding Windows of Lucidity from Monterey and duo Monroe & Julia to the mix. Well aware of the dearth of approved performance spaces in the city, organizers were scrupulous about maintaining a low profile, and through social media drew fans whose responsible attitude toward the community contributed to the success of the all-ages show.

  • Saturday evening's "Teen Galactic Block Party" at the Bread Box Recreation Center had just the right youth recipe for tension-release, with an ample supply of music, games, food and good humor. With several huge inflatable obstacle courses, an electronic games trailer, indoor archery and arcades, glow-stick art, sumo wrestling, raffles, and even a bike rodeo emphasizing safety, the event encouraged healthy fun and community spirit. Kids were provided transportation from the Hebbron Family Center, adding friendships to the mix.
