A cosmopolitan city with a nearly 900 year history, Moscow is Russia's financial and administrative capital and home to many of the country's most recognizable architectural gems. Spread over 2500 square kilometers, the city is served by four airports, three ring roads and a world-famous metro. With a population of 13 million, Moscow is the second-most populated city in Europe after Istanbul.

Faced with a last-minute scramble to find an alternative venue, band members were undeterred, showing both patience and resilience in moving the all-ages, no alcohol event to Rock Boxing Gym in East Salinas. Local energetic trio Electrix led off the evening, followed by hard and fast sounds from Asterion, both from Salinas. Parasitic Ejaculation, from Santa Cruz, delivered a blistering set. The evening was capped off by two local favorites, Vianna, offered melodies juxtaposed with brutal passages, a distinct counterpoint to Aethere’s furious wall of noise.

  • Saturday night’s third annual “Salinas Valley Pride Celebrations ” program at the Fox Theater on South Main Street drew an enthusiastic, all-ages crowd from all over California to watch, laugh and dance well into the early hours of Sunday. Organized by Salinas residents Jacob Agamao and Mariana Luna, also known as DJ Luna,  SVPC is a volunteer-based group whose mission statement is to “unite people of all ages, races, ethnicities, sexual and gender identities in celebration of our diversity.”

In a touching final celebration of All Soul’s Day on Saturday night, hundreds of congregants came to Queen of Heaven in Salinas to attend mass, offer their prayers, and as dusk fell, participate in a candlelight procession.  Friends and family members sat by the graves of loved ones, many of which were decorated with traditional Day of the Dead marigolds, photographs of the departed, and things that were their favorites in life.

  • On Thursday, January 31st, 2013, Salinas city workers, health officials and police conducted an early morning sweep of the Chinatown homeless population, removing encampments on the street and in lots between buildings all along Soledad Street. Although ample warning had been given by authorities, a number of homeless were displaced and have now scattered across the city. A fencing company moved in right behind the city’s workers, digging postholes, and erecting chain link fencing in sections. Using a front loader, unclaimed possessions were taken away and disposed of over the course of three hours, leaving many people standing about on the street with nowhere to go.

  • First constructed in 1839, Christ the Savior Cathedral sits on the northern bank of the Moskva River in central Moscow. At over 100 meters tall, it is the tallest Eastern Orthodox Church in the world. It was completely rebuilt in the 1990's.
