  • In a welcome scene near the Maya Theater in Oldtown Salinas on Saturday night, an energetic crowd of young music fans jammed the Pica Fresh Mex restaurant for a five-band show. Metal headliners Vianna from Salinas brought together like-minded Asterion and A Breed Extinct, also from Salinas, adding Windows of Lucidity from Monterey and duo Monroe & Julia to the mix. Well aware of the dearth of approved performance spaces in the city, organizers were scrupulous about maintaining a low profile, and through social media drew fans whose responsible attitude toward the community contributed to the success of the all-ages show.

Making the souls of the dead feel welcome as they return for a yearly visit, Mexicans in this tropical state offer not only elaborate feasts and flower-filled altars, but dancing as well. Masked bands of performers called "cuadrillos" rehearse for months their choreography, rich with symbolic roles for men, women, devils, and death itself, then over the course of two nights regale both graveyards and city streets with whoops of laughter, raise-the-roof dancing and music until dawn.
