  • Musicians relax before a classical folklore concert. A cosmopolitan city with a nearly 900 year history, Moscow is Russia's financial and administrative capital and home to many of the country's most recognizable architectural gems. Spread over 2500 square kilometers, the city is served by four airports, three ring roads and a world-famous metro. With a population of 13 million, Moscow is the second-most populated city in Europe after Istanbul.

  • Scenes from “Nightmare on Alisal Street,” a boisterous five-band metal show put on by independent Salinas organizers on Saturday, October 19th. Faced with a last-minute scramble to find an alternative venue, band members were undeterred, showing both patience and resilience in moving the all-ages, no alcohol event to Rock Boxing Gym in East Salinas. Local energetic trio Electrix led off the evening, followed by hard and fast sounds from Asterion, both from Salinas. Parasitic Ejaculation, from Santa Cruz, delivered a blistering set. The evening was capped off by two local favorites, Vianna, offered melodies juxtaposed with brutal passages, a distinct counterpoint to Aethere’s furious wall of noise.

  • In a welcome scene near the Maya Theater in Oldtown Salinas on Saturday night, an energetic crowd of young music fans jammed the Pica Fresh Mex restaurant for a five-band show. Metal headliners Vianna from Salinas brought together like-minded Asterion and A Breed Extinct, also from Salinas, adding Windows of Lucidity from Monterey and duo Monroe & Julia to the mix. Well aware of the dearth of approved performance spaces in the city, organizers were scrupulous about maintaining a low profile, and through social media drew fans whose responsible attitude toward the community contributed to the success of the all-ages show.

  • Family members and friends surprised Salinas resident Marina Ocampo on her 80th birthday with a traditional "Mariachi Mañanitas" at her doorstep on Sunday morning. Ocampo is still actively serving the migrant community through the Diocese of Monterey, bringing spiritual and practical support to migrant camps throughout the county. She was an undocumented wife/mother herself in the 50’s and 60’s, living in a small shack on Rider Avenue in Salinas. She managed to raise seven kids and sent them all to college, later becoming a community leader. For her 28 years of service to the migrant community, Ocampo received the “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Cross" in 2013, the highest honor given to a lay person from the Vatican.

  • MEXICO, Veracruz, Tantoyuca, Oct 27- Nov 4, 2009. A trio of Huasteco musicians perform for "cuadrillo" dancers. "Xantolo," the Nahuatl word for "Santos," or holy, marks a week-long period during which the whole Huasteca region of northern Veracruz state prepares for "Dia de los Muertos," the Day of the Dead. For children on the nights of October 31st and adults on November 1st, there is costumed dancing in the streets, and a carnival atmosphere, while Mexican families also honor the yearly return of the souls of their relatives at home and in the graveyards, with flower-bedecked altars and the foods their loved ones preferred in life.
