• Around thirty determined people attended a peace rally at Hartnell College on Monday, then marched to the Salinas Police Department carrying signs and chanting. The rally, called #Baltimore2California, was organized to show unity with citizens of Baltimore protesting the death in police custody of Freddie Gray.

According to a poster disseminated on Twitter, the group’s aim is to “march in solidarity with black people of color who face state-sponsored violence in Baltimore. Join us in addressing that has been experienced by people of color throughout the state.”

Named on the group’s Twitter poster are Angel Ruiz, Osman Hernandez, Carlos Mejia-Gomez, Frank Alvarado, Jr. and Jaime Garcia, who died in Salinas under controversial circumstances.

“I’m here today to stand with the people of Baltimore who rose up after the vicious murder of Freddie Gray. I’m here because their struggles mirror our struggles. Unemployment, gangs and racist cops are all used to keep us in our place. But today, we say no more, no more police brutality, no more violence without accountability. Power belongs to the people, and today we’re taking our power back,” said Miranda Mossey, a Salinas resident and Hartnell student.

 • An unprecedented joint effort between Dorothy's Place staff, CSUMB's Service Learning Institute and a number of dedicated volunteers helped allay resident's anxiety prior to a City of Salinas sweep of the Chinatown homeless encampments in the Soledad Street area. Packing materials were gathered weeks in advance of the regular cleanup, and at first light teams of volunteers woke people up, offering coffee, breakfast, and moving supplies such as boxes and large plastic containers to the needy. In an innovative move, CSUMB's fenced area next to the Chinatown Community Learning Center was designated a secure belongings zone for the day, manned by a check-in system, enabling residents to reclaim their possessions at the end of the day. Food and music was planned for later in the day inside the Chinatown Community Gardens. This well-organized plan made a noticeable difference to everyone. Residents were more prepared for the event, and that made the city's effort to ensure cleanliness in the area less traumatic.

 • On Thursday, January 31st, 2013, Salinas city workers, health officials and police conducted an early morning sweep of the Chinatown homeless population, removing encampments on the street and in lots between buildings all along Soledad Street. Although ample warning had been given by authorities, a number of homeless were displaced and have now scattered across the city. A fencing company moved in right behind the city’s workers, digging postholes, and erecting chain link fencing in sections. Using a front loader, unclaimed possessions were taken away and disposed of over the course of three hours, leaving many people standing about on the street with nowhere to go.

 • Mexico, Guerrero, Acapulco, April 2010. The country's most glamorous tourist destination fifty years ago, the beautiful bays of Acapulco in Mexico's Guerrero state are lined by hotels both new and old, built right up to the sand and accommodating every budget. Though the city's infrastructure has been decaying for years, the lure of this legendary Pacific-coast destination is palpable, with its commendably clean beaches, a warm, welcoming people, and night-life that never stops.

 • Mexico, Yucatan Peninsula, October 16-23, 2010. Nothing says "bienvenido" more than a smile, and in these people of Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo they seem, much like the clear blue waters of the "cenotes," to run through and underlie every aspect of life.
