The event began with a colorful parade from Central Park to the church, featuring standard bearers, a traditional band, and beautifully dressed trios of young women representing area Portuguese communities. Women bore an icon of Saint Isabella, the patron saint of the poor, on a palanquin into the vestry of the church, where she would be crowned as a culmination of Sunday Mass. Princess Elizabeth, whose symbol is a rose, is also known as Isabel of Portugal. Born in Aragon, Spain, she was given as a teenager in marriage to Dennis of Portugal. She gave a great deal of her life to charitable causes, and was canonized as a saint in 1625 by Pope Urban VIII.
